'A Bird came down the Walk'

공작새방의 세 번째 전시 〈새 한 마리 길 위에 내려앉아(A bird came down the walk)〉가 2022년 10월 20일부터 11월 26일까지 열린다. 김유주, 권자연, 윤가림이 모인 이번 전시에선, 에밀리 디킨슨의 시구에서 따온 제목처럼, 땅에 살포시 내려온 한 마리 새를 숨죽여 지켜보는 고요한 아름다움이 방 전체를 감싸고 있는 듯하다. 그러나 자연의 목가적인 이미지 뒤에 치열한 생존 본능이 존재하듯, 섬세하고 잔잔한 작품 뒤에는 작가들의 고민과 예민한 감각이 선연하게 살아 있다.

권자연의 〈그의 산/여기〉는 푸른색 드로잉 연작이다. 작고하신 아버지를 추억하고자 시작된 ‘그의 산’ 주제는 어린 시절 산에 올라 큰 목소리로 노래를 부르면 마치 세상을 가진 것만 같았다는 아버지의 산에 대한 즐거운 추억을 자신 안에서 재해석하는 작업이다. 이런저런 현실을 잠시 뒤로하고 꿈을 꿀 수 있고 자신을 온전히 드러낼 수 있는 공간이었던 아버지의 산은 이제 ‘여기’ 작가의 공간으로 되살아났다. 지금 내 눈에 보이는 것들, 내가 밟는 땅에서 자라는 것들, 내가 보는 앞에서 시간에 따라 변하는 것들 또 변하지 않는 것들, 나를 나이게 하는 이 모든 것을 작가는 아련하고도 얼핏 불분명해 보이는 드로잉으로 표현하고 있다. 한눈에 읽을 수 없기 때문에 깊숙한 시선으로 들여다보게 만드는 그의 작품은 잊히고 가려졌던, 자취를 더듬기조차 어렵도록 바래진 기억과 경험을 오늘 이곳에 되살려낸다. 권자연은 로드아일랜드 디자인 스쿨에서 수학하였고, 이화여대 서양화과 학사 및 석사학위를 받았다.

김유주는 마치 과학자가 정연한 순서에 맞춰 실험을 진행하듯 단계 하나하나를 찬찬히 밟아가며 재료의 물질적 특성을 탐구하는데, 그 결과는 따스하고 서정적이며 때로 우연적이기도 하다. 〈기대〉 시리즈는 흙물을 석고 형틀에 주입하여 성형하는 슬립 캐스팅 기법으로 제작된다. 달걀껍질처럼 얇고 속이 비어 바사삭 부서질 것만 같은 기물에 작가는 숨구멍을 내듯 반복적으로 작은 구멍들을 뚫는다. 극도의 조심성과 인내심을 요하는 작업에 이어 험난한 재벌 소성을 거쳐 뽀얀 차돌 같은 반투명의 기물이 탄생한다. 재료에 내재한 물질적인 힘이 작용하도록 조력하는 소박한 마음과 변화에 대한 기대감이 담뿍한 작품이다. 〈홀드(Holed)〉는 손잡이가 달린 컵에 불로 타들어간 듯한 검은 구멍이 새겨진 연작으로, 바닥에 놓이기도 하고 컵이라는 기능에서 이탈되도록 벽에 나란히 걸리기도 한다. 작가는 자기가 만든 컵에서 지구의 북쪽 끝 라플란드 지역의 토착민인 사미족의 전통 목공예 컵인 ‘쿡사(kuksa)’를 떠올린다. 자작나무를 직접 고르고 깎아 평생 소중하게 사용한다는 쿡사에는 사용자의 기나긴 세월이 깃들기 마련이다. 검게 뚫린 구멍을 차분히 응시하다 보면 우리는 삶에서 겪게 되는 크고 작은 상처 그리고 그것이 남긴 세월의 흔적을 만나게 된다. 김유주는 서울대학교 미술대학 및 동대학원에서 도자공예를 전공했다.

윤가림은 체험적 공감각과 상상으로 감각하는 세계, 닿을 수 없는 시간에 대한 그리움을 표현하는 방법을 연구한다. 이는 자연의 일부로서 존재하며 느끼는 스스로의 근원이나 본질에 대한 그리움이기도 하다. 작가는 특히 촉각적 감각에 집중하며 관객과 접촉하는 작업을 해오고 있는데, 자수 작업이 그 중요한 도구가 된다. 효용가치가 없어진 낡은 동물 백과사전, 오래된 꽃 일러스트, 의학도감 같은 기록물을 선택해 작가가 종이에 직접 자수를 놓는 방식이다. 시간을 촘촘하게 쌓아 올리는 자수란 과정을 통해 윤가림은 먼 과거에 삽화를 그렸던 또 다른 작가의 마음을 상상하며 마치 시공을 초월한 협업을 하듯 자신의 흔적을 더한다. 오래된 그림과 새로 놓인 자수가 만나면서 야기되는 시각적 긴장감과 낯선 촉각은 우리 각자의 해묵은 기억을 소환하고 신선하게 매만질 시간을 선사한다. 윤가림은 서울대학교에서 조각과 시각디자인을 공부하고 졸업 후 영국 슬레이드 미술학교에서 조각으로 석사학위를 받았다.

고즈넉한 가을날, 공작새방에서 선보이는 전시 〈새 한 마리 길 위에 내려앉아〉를 통해 오랜 세월 잊고 지낸 추억에 잠시 잠겨보는 즐거운 시간을 경험하시길 바란다.

Gongjaksaebang's third exhibition, A Bird Came Down the Walk, will be held from October 20th to November 26th, 2022. Gongjaksaebang is a concept space run by Studio Gongok, which specializes in organizing exhibitions and art consulting. Gongjaksaebang introduces fine art, crafts, and design works from domestic and international artists in a cozy home-like space. At the exhibition, where Kim Yoojoo, Kwon Jayeon, and Yoon Kalim present their works, the entire room seems to be surrounded by the serene beauty as if we were breathlessly watching a bird that gently descends to the ground just like a verse from Emily Dickinson's poem. However, just as intense survival instinct exists behind nature's idyllic image, we can clearly feel artists' striving and keen senses behind delicate and calm works. Kwon Jayeon's His Mountain/Here is a series of blue drawings. The theme of 'His Mountain' is derived from remembering her late father. Previously presented, His Mountain was a space full of her father's pleasant childhood memories that he felt --as if he had conquered the world climbing a mountain and singing loudly. However in His Mountains/Here at this exhibition, his mountain has now been revived as the artist's space, 'here'. Kwon expresses all of what 'I' see now, what grows on the ground 'I' step on, what changes and doesn't change over time in front of 'my eyes', and what makes me 'who I am', in her subtle and airy drawings. Unable to be read at a glance, her work requires us to look more deeply, and brings forgotten, hidden and hard-to-trace memories and experience back to here, today. Kwon Jayeon studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in painting at Ewha Womans University. Kim Yoojoo explores the material properties of the medium step by step, as if a scientist conducted an experiment in an orderly sequence, however the results are warm, lyrical, and sometimes accidental. The Expectation series is produced through slip casting, in which slip is poured into a plaster mold and formed. The artist repeatedly pierces small holes on an eggshell-like object that is thin and hollow, as if she were poking a hole to breathe. Following the work that requires extreme caution and patience, a translucent, white, pebble-like object is born after arduous firings. It is a work full of expectations for change and humble minds that help the material forces inherent medium to operate. Holed is a series of cups with handles that are marked with black holes that seem to have been burned by fire. Sometimes they are placed on the floor or hung side by side on the wall to deviate from their original function. In her cups, Kim recalls 'kuksa', a traditional woodworking cup of the Sami people, who are indigenous to the Lapland region at the northern end of the Earth. They handpick birch trees, carve them by themselves and use them preciously for life; these kuksas bear the user's growth rings. When you stare at a black hole, you might be able to see the big and small wounds in your life experience and the traces of the years they have left behind. Kim Yoojoo studied applied art at Seoul National University and got a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the same school. Yoon Kalim expresses the longing for the time and space which cannot be reached with empirical synesthesia and imagination. This is also a longing for one's origin or essence that she feels while existing as part of nature. The artist has been working on connecting with the exhibition visitors, especially focusing on the tactile sense, and embroidery becomes an important tool. She selects antique books such as old animal encyclopedias, old flower illustrations, and medical books that have no practical value anymore, and puts embroidery on the paper by herself. Through the process of embroidery, Yoon adds her own trace as if she collaborated with another artist who has drawn illustrations in the distant past beyond time and space. The visual tension and unfamiliar touch caused by the union of old illustrations and newly-placed embroidery give us time to recall our outdated memories and refresh them. Yoon studied sculpture and visual design at Seoul National University and graduated with a master's degree in sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Arts in England. On a quiet autumn day, we hope you will experience a pleasant time to be immersed in the long-forgotten memories through A Bird Came Down the Walk, presented by Gongjaksaebang.
